The Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI) gives members of the public a legal right of access to documents in the possession of the Council and its officer, which were created or received after 1 January 1989 or are documents relating to their (the public’s) own personal affairs regardless of the age of the documents. In 2000 the Office of the Victorian Privacy Commissioner, Privacy Victoria, created the Information Privacy Act. The aims of the Act are to balance the public interest in the free flow of information with the public interest in respecting privacy and protecting personal information in the public sector. The Act also aims to promote the responsible and transparent handling of personal information in the public sector and to promote awareness of these practices.
Corangamite Shire is committed to providing you with the highest levels of services. This includes protecting your privacy. Accordingly, Council undertakes to ensure full compliance with its obligations under the Information Privacy Act 2000.
Protected Disclosure Act 2012
The Act commenced operation on 10 February 2013, replacing the Whistleblowers Protection Act and establishing IBAC - Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission - as part of a new integrity system for Victoria.
Any person who has reasonable grounds to believe that improper conduct by public bodies and public officers has occurred may make a disclosure without suffering detrimental action in reprisal.
The types of bodies about which a person may make a disclosure include:
- Government agencies and departments
- Statutory authorities
- Officers of municipal councils
- Government-appointed boards and committees
- TAFE colleges
- Public hospitals
- State-funded residential care services
Public Officers include:
- Members of Parliament
- Judicial officers
- IBAC officers
- Council employees
- Public servants
- University employees
- Police officers
- Protective services officers
Disclosures regarding Corangamite Shire staff should be made to the Protected Disclosure Coordinator or the Chief Executive Officer.
Disclosures can be made orally, in writing, electronically or anonomously.
