Derrinallum
Located 176km west of Melbourne on the Hamilton Hwy, Derrinallum is situated at the base of Mount Elephant; an unusually shaped Mount which was purchased by the local communities in partnership with Trust for Nature in the year 2000. Known as the “Swagmans Lighthouse” or the “light house of the western district.” Rising 240 metres above the volcanic plains, the Mount can be seen for many miles around in any direction.
In the earliest days of white settlement, Derrinallum was known as the “The Swamp” even though the aboriginals had named the locality “Djerrinallum”, meaning sea swallow or tern. When the area was surveyed in the 1860s it was officially called Tooliorook but subsequently changed to its present name.
