Cr Ruth Gstrein was first elected to Corangamite Shire Council in 2002, and was re-elected in 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024. She has served as Mayor between 2007-2009, then again from 2020-2022.

Ruth and her husband Peter live in Camperdown where they raised their children, Chris and Lucy. Ruth works at a local architectural firm and catering business. 

What inspired you to run for Council?
I love local government and the ability to work closely with groups and the wider community to achieve their goals.

What do you believe some of the challenges will be for this Council?
The ability to attract State and Federal grants will be harder to achieve following the enormous investment in dealing with COVID-19.

What do you hope to achieve as a Councillor?
To reunite our communities following COVID-19 - socially and a thriving business community. Improved digital and mobile connectivity. Reversal of population decline in the Shire.

If there is one thing (or project) you want to see happen in your time as Councillor, what would it be?
Improved digital and mobile connectivity resulting in a connected and thriving municipality.
