Artist in residence opportunity in Camperdown
Published on 16 July 2024
After the dazzling inaugural Light Up Camperdown festival in December, an artist in residence will be chosen to develop the event.
Corangamite Shire Council is calling for expressions of interests from artists with bright ideas to grow the event.
Mayor Kate Makin said the successful applicant would help make the Light Up Camperdown and Lantern Night a beacon on the district calendar.
“This is a unique opportunity to work from a dedicated space in the beautiful Theatre Royal,” Cr Makin said.
“Ideally we would like someone who can share their creative skills by running lantern-making workshops for local schools and other members of the community.
“They will also help coordinate the spectacular lantern parade through Camperdown’s iconic avenue on Friday 6 December.
“Combined with the lighting setup on the clocktower, courthouse and Civic Centre we have the opportunity to grow a vibrant festival that will invigorate the town centre.”
Council will support the artist in residence through:
- Arts Space: Theatre Royal & other spaces if required ;
- Promotion and marketing of artist in residence and art outcome, community and school workshop and other activities related to project;
- Contact and liaison with schools and community to set up workshops; and
- Dependent on art residence outcomes projection of works on Civic Centre and in light boxes to be negotiated with successful artist.
Events and Creatives Team Leader Tammy Young said the successful artist would be responsible for developing and delivering workshops.
“We want to hear from local artists, or those who have a strong connection to the Shire, from all forms of visual and performing arts, literature or cross-disciplinary practices.
“We expect they will run a minimum of four lantern workshops in local schools will a good number of lanterns to transform the town centre.
“At least another two accessible and inclusive workshops for wider community members will allow as many people to be involved as possible, regardless of work, study or caring commitments.
“Collaborating to create a beautiful social event will help build community connections as well as creating an engaging event on the annual calendar.”
