Beloved playground tree at the end of its natural life

All good things come to an end and that includes the natural lifespan of beloved trees.

The large Tasmanian blue gum in Camperdown Apex Park is in declining health and will be removed before it becomes a hazard.

Corangamite Shire Council has engaged an arborist to assess the tree and it was recommended that the tree be removed within the next six months.

The tree is in the toddlers’ area at the park and adjoins Camperdown Community House.

Acting Manager Facilities and Recreation Jane Hinds said given the high risk area to users of the park and to nearby structures it is recommended that the tree be removed.

“In the next year or two it could potentially start dropping branches which would be a risk to users of the playground and the Community House.

“Council needs to maintain a safe environment for residents and visitors who enjoy the park.”

Ms Hinds said Council’s Parks and Gardens Team regularly maintained the trees in public areas across the Shire and continually assessed their condition.

“Pruning, trimming and removal of trees are carried out from our inspection program as well as requests.”
