Feedback wanted on Regional Digital Strategy
Published on 13 December 2022
Working together to address challenges and seize opportunities presented by new digital technologies is the focus of a regional plan being developed by Corangamite Shire, Moyne Shire and Warrnambool City Council.
The Great South Coast Regional Digital Strategy looks at improving mobile blackspots and connectivity speeds, increasing the fibre network, providing free public Wi-Fi services and better access to smart technologies.
Corangamite Shire Mayor Ruth Gstrein said the strategy was a coordinated approach to ensure new technologies in the region better served residents, businesses and visitors.
“Corangamite is home to one of the most productive dairying regions in Australia and an international visitor icon in the Twelve Apostles.
“There is huge potential for farming and tourism businesses to innovate by embracing smart technologies, but this absolutely depends on access to reliable mobile service and fast internet as a first step,” Cr Gstrein said.
She said the strategy would formalise and build upon the work already done to advocate for infrastructure upgrades such as new mobile towers and fibre-to-premises upgrades across the Shire.
“It is good timing,” Cr Gstrein said.
“Since the start of the pandemic, we have witnessed a surge in digital transformation across the region as technology responds to more people working and studying from home or accessing services such as telehealth.
“Another priority is to build digital capacity and skills to be able to take full advantage of technologies available,” she said.
A draft version of the Great South Coast Regional Digital Strategy is available to view online at www.corangamite.vic.gov.au/digitalstrategy
The regional strategy will be accompanied by separate three-year action plans that meet the needs of each municipality.
Cr Gstrein encouraged residents to view the draft strategy and provide feedback.
“If we want connected, thriving communities that provide economic opportunities for people who live, work and visit, then it is vital we capitalise on these digital opportunities,” Cr Gstrein said.
Residents can provide feedback until Friday 20 January via an online form at www.corangamite.vic.gov.au/digitalstrategy
