Social Media and online community guidelines

Corangamite Shire has several online and social media channels and we encourage you to follow those which are relevant to you and to join in conversations.

Please view a list of our social media channels here.

It is important that our online environments are safe places where everyone can participate without fear of an inappropriate response. To maintain online communities that are safe, respectful and constructive, we have created community guidelines that govern behaviour across our social media and online communities. We ask that all participants follow these guidelines.

Community guidelines

Remain Respectful

We understand that there will be differences of opinion from time to time. Our online community consists of many different people, who all have the right to feel comfortable in sharing their views. No matter the topic being discussed, please be respectful of others and their opinions and refrain from behaviour which is offensive, harassing or discriminatory.

We do not tolerate comments that are:

  • Abusive, threatening, harassing, or attacking others
  • Hateful in language with views that are racist, sexist, homophobic, sexually explicit or otherwise objectionable.
  • Swear words or other language which is likely to offend
  • Spamming in nature.

If you post any comments of this nature, we reserve the right to delete your comment and you may be banned from the page.

Be yourself

Please post under your own name or include your name in your profile. Comments from anonymous, misleading or suspicious profile names may be deleted, regardless of topic.

Stay on topic

We welcome questions, constructive feedback, different opinions, and commentary, but please remember to be both relevant and respectful. Misleading, off-topic, inflammatory, repetitive, offensive, defamatory, or inappropriate comments may be hidden or deleted. You also must not promote incorrect or inexpert advice or other information.

Protect your privacy and the privacy of others

Your comments on any of our social media platforms will be public. Do not reveal any personal or sensitive information about yourself or others, including our staff, you would not feel comfortable sharing with strangers. We recommend you contact us directly if you wish to discuss something that is of a private or personal nature.

Stay safe and observe the law

Do not post anything which breaks the law or encourages others to engage in unlawful activity, such as breach of copyright, defamation or contempt of court. Do not describe or encourage activities which could endanger the safety or wellbeing of others.

Observe channel rules

In addition to our own requirements, be sure to observe the policies of the specific social media channels that you are using - including the rules of Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube.

Councillors and employees of Corangamite Shire are also directed to follow the above guidelines, as well as the guidelines set out in our Social Media Policy.(PDF, 177KB)

Corangamite Shire reserves the right to delete any comments that it considers, within its discretion, fall within the above description. We reserve the right to ban or block those who repeatedly breach the above guidelines.
