Food Waste
Did you know that Australia produces over 7.6 million tonnes of food waste each year? That's enough the fill the Melbourne Cricket Grounds 9 times!
Not only is food waste contributing to more food waste and emissions from the breakdown of food, but it is also costing you more than it needs to.
Here are some tips for reducing your food waste.
- Store your food at the right temperature to get the most out of its life
- Use food containers, covers and packaging to protect food
- Don't store food in warm or humid areas or in direct sunlight
- Make sure frozen food stays frozen hard
- Regularly maintain and service refrigerators
- Check expiration and best before dates on food and use up what will expire first
- Get creative with your leftovers and create a new meal
- Try cooking "root to stem" where you use all of a fruit and vegetable
- Dispose of food waste in your FOGO green bin - even dairy, meat, and bones can be put in this bin
- Base recipes around what you already have
