Almost 100 community groups and individuals will share over $120,000 from Corangamite Shire Council’s 2020-2021 grants program.

Funding from the Community Grants, Facility Grants, and Environment Support Grants programs was allocated at the July Council meeting.

Mayor Neil Trotter said the annual allocation of grants was always a rewarding exercise for Councillors.

“These relatively small amounts that make a huge difference to community groups that have to make up for their limited resources with the sheer enthusiasm of volunteer members,” Cr Trotter said.

“They do terrific work and applicants are to be commended for their initiative in seeking funding to improve the opportunities across a range of activities in the community.

“The evaluation process is quite stringent because we need to ensure the best return for ratepayers’ money. Those who were not successful are encouraged to talk to the relevant Council Officers to improve their chances when the programs reopen next year.”

Applications were evaluated independently by three Council officers, based on the relevant program’s assessment criteria.

After applications were assessed, the Community Grants program had a surplus of $13,376 which was transferred to the Facility Grants program and to fund additional projects.

That left a surplus of $10,106 from the Community Grants Program which will be used in Council’s COVID Recovery as an additional Community Grant.

The Community Grants Program offers “one off” financial assistance up to $1000 to local community groups for workshops, equipment, planning activities, community events and the development of new community, leisure, cultural or recreational programs.

The Facility Grants Program offers up to $2000 to Committees of Management, clubs or organisations to help with facility improvements, repairs or equipment at halls and recreation reserves.

The Environment Support Grants Program offers up to $2000 (include in-kind support) for environment and sustainability projects, such as weed control, sustainable agriculture, projects related to climate change, native vegetation protection, improvements to soil health and water quality, waste reduction or including installation of energy and water saving items at community facilities.

The Events and Festivals Grants Program will be run separately later in the year when there is more information about when coronavirus restrictions on mass gatherings are likely to be lifted.
