Council seeks climate reference group members
Published on 12 June 2024
Work on tackling climate change in Corangamite Shire is heating up.
After months of research, public consultation and feedback on the draft 10-year Environment and Sustainability Strategy, Council is forming a community reference group to help develop of a Climate Change Action plan.
Mayor Kate Makin said Council has started developing a Climate Change Action Plan and is now seeking expressions of interest from community members to participate on a Climate Change Reference Group during the Action Plan development process.
“We are looking for community members across the Shire who understand the challenges posed by climate change and would like to contribute to the Shire’s climate response,” Cr Makin said.
“A broad range of people with diverse backgrounds and expertise will make the group more effective in problem-solving and innovation so I encourage anyone to apply.
“Council is committed to addressing the current and future impacts of climate change on the health, economy and wellbeing of residents and our environment.”
In the Environment and Sustainability Strategy 2024-2034, Council acknowledged the importance of addressing climate change.
As part of this acknowledgement, Council recognised the need to develop a Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) to help the organisation and wider community to mitigate the impacts of climate change and adapt to changes that are already happening.
Climate change was also identified by the community as a key opportunity in the ‘Community Vision 2040’.
To join the reference group, nominees must live, work, study, volunteer, or own a business in the Shire.
Spokesperson encouraged interested people to read the Terms of Reference and answer a short questionnaire at corangamite.vic.gov.au/CCRG-EOI
Applications close by 20 June 2024.
